Dawn Redhead – ‘Kind Heart Award’
Dawn from Swansea is a finalist in our 'Kind Heart' category, and as her nomination shows, care and compassion are attributes that come naturally to her. She regularly takes the time to check in on others, offer reassurance, and ensure everyone feels included.
A particularly touching example of this came when an individual was grieving the loss of a family member. Dawn stepped in to listen whenever they needed to talk and offered reassurance during this exceptionally difficult time. Her empathy made a lasting difference, helping them feel less alone when it mattered most.
As her nomination states, 'Dawn’s kindness is something she shows every day, and she always looks for ways to brighten someone else’s day with a smile, kind words, or thoughtful gestures.'
When we caught up with Dawn, she shared how much it meant to hear these kind words, and how excited she is for a fun evening together next month. We can't wait!

Michael Reakes - 'Rising Star Award'
Support worker Michael has been working for Cartrefi for just under a year and a half, and the impact he has made in that short amount of time is nothing short of exceptional.
Michael received multiple nominations from colleagues, managers, and the people we support. Every nomination highlighting his warm nature, can-do attitude and his dedicated work with RCT's Crafty Crew and at the communal garden at Crown Avenue.
Reflecting on his Cartrefi journey so far, Michael shared that stepping into support work was a 180-degree career turn for him, but one he wishes he had made much sooner. Getting involved with Crafty Crew, he described, happened naturally, but quickly became a highlight of his role. He loves seeing the joy and social connection it brings to the people we support, making every session a pleasure to attend.
Michael has also been praised for his work when setting up a communal garden space at Crown Avenue in Treorchy. After a few residents expressed an interest in creating and managing a garden, Michael embraced the idea with open arms. Thanks to his initiative, they now have a thriving group that meets regularly to socialise and plant a range of flowers and vegetables.
From his nominations and after meeting Michael in person, it's clear to see that enthusiasm and empathy show in everything he does, making him valued part of the Cartrefi team and very deserving of his finalist spot.

Liam Spiller - 'Support Worker of The Year'
Liam from our Swansea team, has been named as a finalist in our 'Support Worker of The Year' category, and as his nomination puts it; 'He is the kind of support worker you wish you could replicate.'
Liam is a natural for tailoring his approach to everyone he supports, taking the time to understand their wants, needs and interests, ensuring everyone feels understood, valued, and respected. When meeting up with Liam, we asked him what is most important when working in his role. He said: 'Person centered care is a must, finding out a persons hobbies and interests - we all want to enjoy life don't we, and It's the same for the people we support'.
A great example of Liam’s person-centered approach is his work with Claire, whom he regularly supports. By tailoring her support around her love for exercise, Liam regularly joins her in workout classes and encourages her to participate in fitness-focused events. Examples include, taking part with her in the Cardiff Half Marathon and most recently, joining her for the Macmillan Mighty Hike, on an impressive 28-mile route.
Liam's nomination also touches on how seamlessly he brings all of our core values together, and that above all, the trust and respect he has built with the people we support speaks for itself. Everyone looks forward to the next time Liam is on shift, with people feeling naturally engaged, comfortable, and happy.
